I’m convinced that the best way to visit and explore another culture is by bicycle. Cycling opens up opportunities to connect with ordinary people and take in the environment using all the senses. I’ve toured many regions of Japan on my custom, high performance folding Bike Friday and ridden with cyclists in Hokkaido, Tokyo, Karuizawa, Mt. Fuji, Kyoto, Osaka, and the Seto Inland Sea.
In 2006, I started Japan Cycle Tours LLC, to offer personalized bicycle tours of Hokkaido, Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, the Inland Sea islands, and more. Having grown up in and lived in Japan for many years, I enjoy introducing cyclists to the country from an insider’s perspective on the people and culture.
To prepare for your tour of Japan, I recommend reading my book, Living Abroad in Japan, which presents the language, history, cultural values, communication, tips for getting around, with an overview of six different regions of Japan. Find out how rewarding it is to explore Japan, whether for two weeks, two months, or more!
